Water is a vital but limited resource in the Hood River Watershed, particularly in the late summer months when precipitation is low and irrigation demand is high. The more water used by households, farms, industries, and businesses, the less water is available in streams for fish and other aquatic life. While water providers and some individuals hold legal rights to take water from the springs and rivers of the Watershed, these rights can conflict with instream water rights that are intended to ensure minimum streamflows for fish.
Water conservation is a critical priority for the Watershed Group and its partners, who collaborate on innovative approaches to protect and manage water to ensure that sufficient water is available for both humans and fish, now and into the future.
These approaches include:
• Converting open irrigation canals and ditches to piped and pressurized distribution systems to reduce water loss from leakage and overflows
• Upgrading farm and home irrigation systems using more water efficient technology that reduces over-watering and runoff
• Collaborating with businesses to identify and implement water saving practices
• Restoring wetlands to improve natural water storage capacity

How can we work together?
Instream Habitat
We work with landowners and businesses to plan for and implement instream habitat restoration projects that benefit native fish populations and other wildlife, as well as reduce erosion and flooding impacts. We can also assist in seeking grant funding for projects. Contact us to explore instream restoration opportunities on your property.
Water Conservation
We work with landowners, irrigation districts, and businesses to plan for and implement water conservation, which can include irrigation efficiency projects as well as improvements for commercial or industrial practices. We can also assist in seeking grant funding for projects. Contact us to explore water conservation opportunities on your property or at your business.
Riparian Enhancement
We work with landowners and businesses to restore streamside vegetation by planting native trees and shrubs to benefit our river and its tributaries. We can also assist in seeking grant funding for projects. Contact us to explore riparian restoration opportunities on your property.
